The Maha Bodhi Journal – The Vipassana Number 08-1977 (eng)
Sayagyi U Ba Khin
We are happy to bring out this special Issue of the Mha Bodhi Journal (now in book form) on the experiences of Vipassana-bhavana with special reference to the medthod of meditation as taught by Sayagyi U Ba Khin of Burma.
Vipassana meditation is the last and the most important part of the eight-fold path. This path is represented by the 3 stages of sila of virtue, Samadhi or tranquility and panna or wisdom.
Vipassana is the last stage which leads to the attainment of insight-knowledge of impermanent (anicca) unsatisfoatory (dukka) and impersonal (annata) nature of all composite things and the realisation of the ultimate peace of Nibbana. So one who practises Vipassana is expected to have already covered the first two stages.
